Shapes & Size – Average Joe’s in the NL East

I wanted to start with the Mets only because I had a tough time finding a guy on their active roster who fit the bill of being “average” based on these results.

So I only examined the guys that are on their current active roster in mid-aug 2023. Just after they traded two sure-fire hall of farmers (Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander).

When I did that the average height went up half an inch while body weight climbed 6 lbs. So the active roster is a little bit taller and heavier. They were already the heaviest staff in the division to start with.

The closet to an “average” guy then became Carlos Carrasco at 6’4″ and 224lbs. (27.3 BMI)

Braves

Right now, the Braves have an 11-game lead in the NL East and the best record in the MLB. Here’s what a scatter plot with their pitchers looks like

In the middle of this cluster, you will find Pierce Johnson – 6’2″ & 202 lbs (25.9 BMI)

Marlins

Their average guy is George Soriano – 6’3″ & 210 (BMI 26.2)

Phillies

Micheal Lorenzen isn’t even on this graph since he was recently traded. But if he it would be near the middle and fill that big empty space at 6’3″ & 217 lbs (27.1 BMI). Here he is throwing a no-hitter.

Nationals

Scatter Plot

The average guy is Corey Abbott 6’2″ and 217 lbs (27.9). His fastball velocity however is well below average ranking 294th in the league at around 92 mph. This means this guy knows how to pitch and spin a baseball.
